The West's Awake
by Máire Uí Scolaí

The men from the West may not have won any silver ware this season but on Saturday (Oct.11th) a determined Galway Junior Camogie team made sure to get their hands on the All-Ireland Junior championship crown when they defeated Clare 1-12 to 2-05 in the replay of the All-Ireland Junior Final in O'Connor Park, Tullamore.

Played in front of a large crowd, Galway were first on to the score board after nine minutes following a Marese Flanagan point from play. However, the Banner who were delighted to welcome the injured Moira Mc Mahon back went ahead immediately with a goal from Aoife Ryan which was fired home from a tight angle to put Clare ahead.Gritty Galway battled away and were rewarded with a goal at the midway stage from corner forward Emma Kilkelly. Full forward Ann Marie Hayes found Emma on the corner who knocked in Galway's only goal of the match. It was a sweet day for Hayes, a niece of former Galway hurler Conor who missed the drawn game due to the U21'S All-Ireland in Thurles. However, he and the rest of the family watched Ann Marie win her first All-Ireland in some style on Saturday.

That goal gave Galway a half time lead of 1-06 to 1-02. Indeed, both sides should have had more scores to their name as both missed many scoring opportunities particularly from the placed ball.

Clare added a further two points immediately after the break from Deirdre Murphy and Laura Linnane. Galway's very effective full forward line of captain Brenda Kerins, Ann Marie Hayes and player of the match Emma Kilkelly were combining very well, while their defence had cut down Clare's Deirdre Murphy's supply of the ball. The Banner, who were chasing their first Junior title since 1986 could only add one more point in the second half while Galway added a further four points from play. With time ticking away Clare's Deirdre Murphy was awarded a free some twenty yards out and it travelled all the way to the net. On this occasion there was not enough time left for a houdini act and thus Galway brought their first New Ireland Cup across the Shannon for the first time since 1998.
