All-Ireland Final: Galway 3-16 Kilkenny 2-6 |
The Galway Minor Camogie team won the All-Ireland final in Tailteann Park, Navan, when they overcame a good Kilkenny side and brought the "Corn Tailteann" across the Shannon for the tenth time. Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael is celebrating its Centenary this year and it was fitting that the first of the Championship finals was played in Navan, where the first Camogie game was played 100 years ago.Galway got off to a dream start against Kilkenny with two goals in the opening 5 minutes. The opening goal coming after 3 minutes when Galway captain Aisling Tuohy passed to Noreen Coen who rattled the back of the net. Kilkenny responded with a quick point from Laura Kavanagh, Galway got their second goal from Martina Conroy after she collected a nice hand pass from Catriona Cormican. During the next 20 minutes Galway and Kilkenny traded points, Niamh Kilkenny a point from play, Martina Conroy two from placed balls were cancelled out by Marie Murphy, Marie Dargan and Orla McCormack. During this period Kilkennny piled on the pressure and forced Stephanie Gannon to make an excellent double save. Kilkenny dominated the final minutes with Lucinda Gahan rifling home to the back of the net and Ann-Marie Whelan adding on a point, to leave the minimum between the sides. In the final minutes Kilkenny could have drawn level but were unlucky to hit the post, with Galway going down the other end and Martina Conroy to score with the last puck of the half, after she'd been fouled. Leaving the half time score 2-4 to 1-5 in favour of Galway.
This was as close as Kilkenny were to come as a rampant Galway blew them out of the water in the second half. After fifteen minutes of the half Galway had tagged on 1-6 without reply of which 1-5 was from play. These scores coming from Sarah Noone 1-1, Noreen Coen 0-2, Catriona Cormican 0-1, Martina Conroy 45 and centre back Jessica Gill with yet another inspiring point from 50metres. Kilkenny's Colette Dormer scored a goal on the 15th minute mark and this lead to another string of scores from Galway, Lorraine Ryan, Catriona Cormican and Jessica Gill a point each and two placed balls from the accurate hurl of Martina Conroy. Kilkenny had piled on the pressure throughout the half without reward.
Player of the match Stephanie Gannon made some great saves with the highlight being a penalty save in the 27th minute. The Galway backs were a very strong defensive unit with no one putting a foot wrong. The midfield paring of Fiona Hahnefield and Lorraine Ryan made sure the Galway forwards were never short of ball. Galway were lucky to have strength and depth with subs like Emer Haverty, Michelle Glynn, Marian Farragher, Richelle O'Brien and Jennifer Coone being introduced during various stages of the half and playing well. Fittingly enough Martina Conroy scored the last point of the day with yet another placed ball to leave her top scorer with a personal tally of 1-7. |

Aisling Tuohy accepted the cup from the President of the Camogie Association Miriam O' Callaghan to Great cheering from the Galway Supporters. The Galway management which consisted of Kevin Kelly, Martina Uniacke, Liam Spellman and Denise Gilligan had given a lot of time and commitment preparing this team. This must have brought back memories for Denise Gilligan who won her first All-Ireland medal at Minor Grade in 1994. Kevin and Martina would have tested success before with the county U-14's',while Liam Spellman will have good memories as a new comer to the county Camogie scene. Bonfires blazed between Ballinasloe and Athenry where there was an official home coming.
There to greet the team bus on their way to Athenry was a Garda car which escorted the bus to the town centre, where a large crowd of people were waiting to welcome the the team.
